Ayn Rand Speaks
By Boris Reitman
- 7 minutes read - 1326 wordsIn this concise 9-minute presentation, Ayn Rand introduces the essentials of Objectivism, her philosophical system based on reason and individualism.
Ayn Rand’s Philosophic Achievement
Ayn Rand’s achievement was to create the first fully integrated philosophical system starting from the base of objective reality. Her philosophy addresses the deepest and most fundamental questions of human existence:
-
In metaphysics, she identified existence, consciousness, and identity as the basic axioms of philosophy, showing that existence exists independent of consciousness.
-
In epistemology, she solved the problem of universals - explaining how the human mind can validly form abstract concepts from perceptual data.
-
In ethics, she demonstrated that values are objective, based on the requirements of human life, and that rationality is man’s basic virtue.
-
In politics, she provided the first philosophical validation of individual rights and capitalism, deriving them from man’s nature and needs as a rational being.
What makes her achievement unique is not just the individual solutions, but their integration into a complete philosophical system, with each part necessitating and supporting the others.

And There Is More
Ayn Rand’s call for reason and individual freedom has been heard. Today, her followers continue to develop and spread the philosophy of Objectivism, makng her ideas accessible to new generations.
There are many other resources for studying the philosophy of Objectivism: courses, seminars, conferences, podcasts, and discussion groups. Every year, the Ayn Rand Institute holds OCON (Objectivist Conference), featuring leading experts on Objectivism.
What This Means for Anthemism
Recall that Anthemism aims to create a laissez-faire capitalist state based on Objectivism. Why add the “based on Objectivism” part? Why not just say “laissez-faire” capitalism? When establishing a new country, we face a fundamental challenge: we need to prevent it from becoming the same statist country we are trying to escape. For this, we need Objectivism, the system of philosophy that Ayn Rand formulated.
We have abundant resources in writing and audio from which to draw. Most Objectivists think that by continuing to spread Objectivist ideas via lectures and books like those listed above, we will reach laissez-faire. We will, eventually, because ideas drive history—but when? In 10 years, 50 years, 100 years? If anything, having so much reading and listening material yet disproportionately few Objectivists proves this hope comes with a long wait. Instead, we must focus the Objectivist effort on a smaller population, one that’s eager to learn and has an incentive to do so.
Who has the incentive? Those who would join the new country as immigrants present a short window of opportunity when they are eager to learn new ideas. After all, they want to justify why they uprooted themselves to come to this new place where they must start life from scratch. Thus, spreading Objectivism is more effective in the Anthemism context because we focus it on a small population, with the formation of a new country serving as the catalyst.
